Privacy Policy for EverydayExplorer.com
National Geographic respects and protects the privacy of our users. We encourage other sites to join us in this effort.
Collection, Use, and Disclosure of Information
This Web site is operated by National Geographic Society and our subsidiary, NGHT, Inc., which also is known as nationalgeographic.com, and by our affiliated company, NGC Network US, LLC, which is also known as National Geographic Channel. We refer to these organizations as "National Geographic," "we" or "our." At www.everydayexplorer.com, the only use we make of personally identifiable information (usually e-mail addresses) is to respond one time to a question or request for information from a child, to confirm acceptance or rejection of scrapbook submissions, or to award prizes in a game or sweepstakes feature on our site. We do not otherwise make use of personally identifiable information, nor do we provide it to third parties except in the limited circumstances described in this policy. Please note, however, that certain features of this Web site are intended for use by adults: the lesson plans, online community and activity plans. Use of the online community is governed by a separate privacy policy, which is accessible by clicking the "Privacy Policy" link from the homepage of the community Web site. This Web site was designed and developed by a third party service provider named Hello Design, LLC, who will have access to the Web site to help maintain it. Hello Design has agreed to maintain the confidentiality of any personally identifiable information to which they may have access and to only use it for the purpose of maintaining this Web site. The photos and text that kids submit to the Everyday Explorer scrapbook feature are housed on the servers of a third party service provider named Rackspace, Ltd. Rackspace has agreed to only use any personally identifiable information for the purposes of housing the scrapbook Web pages, and has agreed to maintain the confidentiality of any information they receive from us.
Parental Consent
If we decide to collect personally identifiable information for other reasons, we will notify parents that it is being requested, disclose the reasons for collecting it, and disclose our intended use for it. We will seek parental consent before collecting any personally identifiable information from children under the age of 13. If we do collect it, parents may request information on the type of data being collected, view their child's information, and, if they choose, prohibit us from making further use of their child's information. We will not provide personally identifiable information to third parties for marketing and promotional purposes. We will not disclose personally identifiable information to other third parties except as required by law, for example, in response to a court order or subpoena, or in response to a specific law enforcement agency's request.
U.S. federal law prohibits us from requiring kids to give any more personally identifiable information than is necessary to participate in a given activity. A parent or guardian may permit a user under 13 to participate in activities on our Web site without consenting to the disclosure of the user under 13's personally identifiable information to any third parties. No personally identifiable information should be submitted to, or posted at, this Web site by any user under the age of 13 without the consent of such user's parent or guardian.
Scrapbook
Registration is required to create a scrapbook on this Web site. Registration is free. When you register to create a scrapbook, we will ask you for only the information that is necessary to participate in this activity such as your e-mail address, user name (your user name should not be your real name), password, scrapbook name, scrapbook location (city and state), scrapbook category. Other than e-mail addresses, this information is not personally identifiable information. For users under the age of 13, we will also ask for a parent or guardian's e-mail address. Users under 13 may not create a scrapbook without prior verifiable parental consent. We will not post users' e-mail addressed online. Users should not post any personally identifiable information online. Please keep in mind that whenever you give out personally identifiable information online, for example, in the text you include in your scrapbook, that information can be collected and used by people you don't know. While National Geographic strives to protect your personally identifiable information and privacy, we cannot guarantee the security of any information you disclose online and you do so at your own risk.
Sweepstakes and Contests
If a child participates in a kids' sweepstakes or contest, we will retain his or her e-mail address for the duration of the sweepstakes or contest until we have successfully chosen the winner(s), awarded the prize(s), and completed the administration of the sweepstakes or contest as required by law. The winner(s) will be notified by e-mail or another method, as described in the rules. We will not use the participants' e-mail addresses for any other purposes. After the administration of the sweepstakes or contest is completed all participants' e-mail addresses will be deleted from our system.
Links to Other Sites
When children click on links from the Everyday Explorer Web site to other sites, we may open the other sites in a new browser window.
We make every effort to link to appropriate outside sites for kids. However, these other sites are not governed by our privacy policy and may collect personally identifiable information. We urge children to check with a parent, guardian or other adult before linking to any new Web sites.
Cookies
Cookies are small text files that are stored on a user's computer and allow Web sites to remember information about users. We use cookies for a variety of purposes in order to enhance the quality of our Web site. We use transient (also called "session ID") cookies to provide continuity from page to page. A session ID cookie expires when you close your browser. We also use persistent cookies. Persistent cookies allow our scrapbook feature to recognize your browser when you return after your first visit to that part of our Web site. Cookies allow us to let you sign back in to your scrapbook without having to register all over again each time. You can choose to remove persistent cookies through your browser options. However, if you do so, your ability to use the scrapbook feature will be limited.
Security
The security and confidentiality of your information is extremely important to us, and we take a number of steps to safeguard any personally identifiable information that you provide to us. However, no method of transmitting or storing electronic data is ever completely secure, and therefore we cannot warrant or guarantee that such information will never be accessed, used or released in a manner that is inconsistent with this policy.
Contact Information
If you have any questions, comments, or concerns about our privacy policy—or to review, change, or modify personally identifiable information collected previously, or to request additional information regarding our disclosure of your personally identifiable information to third parties—please contact Michael Heasley at the National Geographic Channel, 1145 17th Street, Washington, D.C. 20036-4688.
